Contact patch

What is Contact patch in skateboarding?

The contact patch is the part of the wheel's surface that touches the ground. Its width changes grip and rolling resistance.

Extended definition

With a bigger patch your weight spreads out, the urethane compresses less and the wheel rolls with less resistance. Rounded walls leave less contact; straight edges give the maximum. That is why the same durometer feels different depending on the wheel's shape.
